The security of our buyers, sellers and visitors is important to us, and we want our community to know that Xcat Marketplace is actively monitored and protected.
Security isn't something we simply install and then forget about. We regularly monitor traffic reaching Xcat, investigate unusual activity and adjust our protection as new patterns emerge.
Recently, our monitoring identified a substantial amount of unwanted automated traffic attempting to access Xcat while behaving much like ordinary web browsers.
During one recent 24-hour period, Xcat's infrastructure handled approximately 134,000 web requests. One of our existing Xcat-specific security protections alone had already prevented approximately 9,770 unwanted automated requests.
We subsequently carried out a more detailed investigation using our server traffic records. This allowed us to identify additional patterns of automated activity that were not immediately distinguishable from genuine visitors.
A New Layer of Protection
As a result of that investigation, we have just added a new security layer to Xcat Marketplace and strengthened some of our existing protection.
The objective isn't to make life difficult for genuine visitors. Quite the opposite.
We want legitimate buyers and sellers to be able to use Xcat normally while suspicious automated activity is identified and dealt with as early as possible, before it can unnecessarily consume marketplace resources or interfere with the experience of genuine users.
The results following these changes have already been encouraging, with a substantial reduction in the abnormal automated traffic we had been observing.
Security Is an Ongoing Job
No public website can prevent automated systems from attempting to access it, and the methods used by automated traffic continually change.
That's why Xcat's approach is ongoing. We monitor, investigate and adapt.
We are introducing regular reviews of Xcat traffic and security activity, and as the marketplace grows we intend to publish further updates so our community can see that the platform they buy and sell through is being actively maintained and protected.
We won't publish the technical details of our security systems or exactly how suspicious traffic is identified, for obvious reasons. But where appropriate, we will share verified statistics about the amount of unwanted activity our systems are dealing with.
For us, this is part of building a marketplace people can trust.
Genuine people first. Automated abuse gets stopped at the door.
